When a dryer won’t start, the first instinct is usually to look at the dryer itself. But in a GE stackable washer/dryer combo, the washer and dryer share controls — so a problem with one side can prevent the entire unit from working.
That’s exactly what happened at a property we visited in Mesa, AZ. The dryer wouldn’t power on at all, and the residents assumed the issue was electrical. But when our tech arrived, he noticed the washer was flashing both the Wash and Rinse lights, a known error signal from GE.
Using the factory service manual and internal diagnostics, we entered test mode and confirmed a lid lock fault. The machine wouldn’t acknowledge the lid was secure — a safety feature that blocks all washer and dryer operation.
We tested the lid lock manually and even got it to engage during diagnostics, but the error code remained active, suggesting either:
We provided the property manager with a full repair quote and outlined the next steps. Without our tools and experience, it could have easily been mistaken for a dryer control board failure — which would’ve cost significantly more to fix.
Compare that to the $723+ it would’ve cost to replace the control board blindly.
